Support Groups and Counselling
The Alzheimer Society of Brant offers ongoing monthly caregiver support groups to share common problems and to understand that "you are not alone". People are welcome to these meetings at any time but are encouraged to attend the caregiver education series first.
The Society is pleased to offer a support group to persons in the early stages of Alzheimer’s disease. Those who are in the early stages are encouraged to express their own feelings and to share their thoughts with others that are in a similar situation while, at the same time, benefiting from new friendships. If your loved one wishes to attend or you would like to inquire further, please contact our office.
The Alzheimer Society also offers individual and family counseling. Although we often take drop-ins, it is advisable to call the office first to make an appointment.
Caregiver Respite
Our caregiver respite service allows the Society to provide a professional home support worker to take care of the person with Alzheimers while the primary caregiver can leave their home, if they so wish, for a short period of time to have that much needed break.
Volunteer Visiting Respite Service
The main goal of this community-based program is to provide a volunteer visiting program with an activation component for the benefit of a person with Alzheimer's disease or a related dementia.

The Society's second goal is to provide a support network in which institutionalization of the person with Alzheimers may be delayed, due to the maintenance of independence and stimulation for the person with Alzheimers. Through this volunteer visiting program the Society has many objectives:

  • to recruit, screen and train volunteers to provide a person with Alzheimer's with a Friendly Companion

  • to create a pleasant experience for the client by visiting and reminiscing by means of conversation, music or looking at old photos

  • to maintain the person with Alzheimers's skill level through stimulation activities such as crafts, baking, games or by providing the client with a safe walk experience

  • to act as respite relief for caregivers enabling them to leave the home if they so wish to do errands, hobbies, etc.
Safely Home Registry
For your peace of mind and theirs, you may register your loved one with our Safely Home Wandering Persons Registry. These confidential registries provide appropriate police services with identification information of your loved one which, in turn, will help them find your loved one and return them safely home again. Registration forms are available at our office.

There are two ways in which to put someone on the registry. Nationally or locally. If the client is registered nationally they are also put on the local registry. If they are put on the local registry only, they are not registered nationally. The local registry involves filling in a form with all information regarding the client. We also request that a current photo be provided. The form is then copied and sent to the three police departments in Brant County.

Brantford Police
Ontario Provincial Police
Six Nations Police

On an annual basis the society contacts the caregiver of the person with Alzheimers to verify that no changes have occurred in the information provided and that the client should still be on the registry.

In the event that a person is found wandering, the registry provides the police with a list of names and photos in which to look for someone matching the physical description of the person they have found. The registry has been accessed and proven that it works.

Updates are also done annually on national registrations as well. There is a one time $35 fee for a national registration. This is to cover the cost of the bracelet and ID kit. Should a bracelet be lost for any reason it can be replaced for a small fee.
